Have you ever seen the pilot episode of a new series and thought, "well, now there's a breath of fresh air, I'm going to check that out!" That's how I felt reading this first installment of the Starhawke Rising series.Sharpe's world building is en pointe, combining both familiar and novel themes and elements into her landscapes, characters, and plot. Our hero, Aurora Hawke, is the kind of strong women character Scifi fans clamor for: smart, independent, courageous, loyal to her crew, and also, just flawed and inwardly conflicted enough on occasion to give her dimension and realism. Her crew compliment both the story and Hawke herself, adding elements of other worlds, space, futurism, technology, security... Like a fine sauce, this balanced mix definitely enhances and even makes the dish. Although the book does have a well-defined arc, we get into the world just enough to understand its possibilities, and the book wraps up with a tempting hint at adventures to come.
A highly recommended read.

I had a blast reading this story. Finished it within a few days of downloading the version. I'm not typically a science fiction reader, but I got sucked in right away to the adventure and the depth of the characters. Can't wait to get my hands on the next book by Audrey Sharpe. I finished The Dark of Light during a vacation over the holiday and just loved it! It's a fun ride with great characters and as the story progressed I found it more and more difficult to put it down. I highly recommend it!!
The world through a female captains eyes as written be a female author. Refreshing. Sometimes I need a break from the captains, regardless of gender, as written by male authors. I read the second in the series and now await the third one.
Enjoyed this book very much. It was nice to read a science fiction adventure that did not have sex on every page (like so many of the newer ones do). I hope this series goes on for a long time.
Truly enjoyed meeting Aurora Hawke and company. Looking forward to the next installment. Audrey Sharpe has developed characters that seem alive and make you anxious to meet them. The story line moves along well and just when you think you have it figured out she throws in a twist that makes you think again. Loved it and very curious to see where the story will end up. Whatever the ending the journey will be very enjoyable.
This is a wonderful novel set in the future. It has tension and drama. I was totally engrossed with the characters which are well developed by the author. The plot is nicely laid out and leads to an ending that is not predictable. That makes the book so much fun to read. Even though I am not a Sci-Fi enthusiast by any means, I did get into this book and look forward to renewing my acquaintance with all the characters in the continuing saga. I highly recommend this book to those who love adventure and drama.

The flaws in the plot let this story down. For example the Captain doesn’t ask who the temporary pilot/navigator is going to be, she doesn’t ask the name of person she is to met when she reaches her destination. They are scientists and there isn’t many of them and they are not given any marines to defend them. Instead a well trained group of ? are sent but have to remain hidden from the captain and her crew. This doesn’t make sense. Plus there are two men who want her. I think this is a true romance set in space. I gave up halfway through.
